“So, um, you know—uh—how’s it going?” Jioni said as she avoided eye contact.
Brandon and Kathy looked at each other and then back at Jioni.
Brandon’s eyebrows lowered, and he made direct eye contact. He said nothing and sat up straight; on the other hand, Kathy’s expression was difficult to read since her bangs covered her eyes, but Jioni couldn’t miss the frown she gave.
“I’m sorry, but I recognize that look,” Brandon said. He folded his arms with worry plastered on his face. “It’s the one you make when you’re gonna do something impulsive.”
“What? No,” Jioni said as she extended her last note.
Kathy stood up, and the noise from the swing halted. She pulled on the garment around Jioni’s waist repeatedly–it caused Jioni to step back.
