Jioni held her flashlight with a loosened grip. The building remained silent as she climbed the neverending stairs. But suddenly, the building creaked again; and Jioni held her breath. The stairwell soon shook. Jioni’s eyes shot open, her grip now firm on the flashlight. The entire structure moved side to side with violence.
The ground vibrated, and Jioni swayed; her hands searched for the broken rail unsuccessfully. The inconsistent light disoriented her, and she panted hard. Her body went limp with each cut and gash from the falling ceiling. The stairwell had no protection from the debris that crashed around her. Jioni yanked Kathy out of the way, and after ten seconds, it stopped in silence, but Jioni’s heart ceased to stop beating loudly.
