Dissonant Reverence: 9-18

“If Jioni doesn’t end up in prison, she’ll probably end up dead if someone doesn’t help her,” Jolene said with a matter-of-fact expression. “Anyway, I recorded it. Then, I reported this to Bree Prexy on the emergency report line. And I don’t want to hear it from you. I’m tired of her trying to ruin your life.”

Brandon’s eyes widened. “The emergency report line? Jolene! I’m sorry, but why’d you— why must you insert yourself in everything?”

Jolene stood up quickly. She dug into her shirt and pulled out a diagram with crudely drawn pictures. “I’m not inserting myself.” Jolene scowled as she shook the paper. “If anything, this could help my career—our careers!”

Brandon remained silent, and he sank into his bed.
