Bree stared blankly. If she was a Zhecran, why were so many Zhecran features missing: no pointy ears, leaves in the hair, or tree branches protruding from her forehead. Bree inched closer and then touched Skylar’s braid; well, this explained the pine smell on her.
“So, a Zhecran, hm? Have you lived in Outergen before?” Bree asked.
“Half Zhecran. But no, as old man Fred said, I am from the Mauve Caves.” Skylar handed her a GeoDevice. “And you?”
“That is my old device. My new one is pink.” Bree threw it against the wall. It shattered on impact.
Skylar stared at her, mortified. She then lowered her head and opened up a drawer, searching within it.
Bree smiled. This Coterie woman definitely didn’t act like the old Coterie man: she was jittery, nervous, and timid. There was a good chance that she could keep the power she held—all while having a Coterie member acting like a servant. Bree giggled to herself and then answered the insipid weirdo’s question.
“I have been to Outergen several times, yes. For vacation as a child, but now often for business these days.”
Skylar’s demeanor changed. As she looked up from searching a drawer. She wore a warm smile and seemed confident for the first time since this interaction. Her hands folded in front of her, and she stepped closer.
