“Why did we have to climb the top of this building?” Emmitt said between breaths. He sat on his knees.
“Because this is the only way to get inside her room,” Jioni replied. She pointed to the flat roof access hatch and opened it. The yellowed and scratched glass panel groaned as the rust fell off it.
“I get it. So the building looks inaccessible and damaged in the front, but—” Emmitt started.
“Inside, it’s in perfect condition. It started out as a hideout. Then she sort of started moving all her things here to get away from the youth boarding center,” Jioni said. She stepped inside and motioned for Emmitt to follow. “I figured since we are leaving anyway, she wouldn’t mind that I brought you here. At least that’s what I thought before I found out she hated you.”
“Guilty by association, apparently.” Emmitt looked away.
