LaMesha shot one last glare before taking off. The moment she was out of sight, Kathy and Jioni shared a glance and then sighed.
Kathy dusted herself off and used her hands to ruffle the dirt out of her hair.
Jioni, in contrast, remained seated, covered in the debris: she stared at the ground and touched her wounds—specifically the one near her eye and the left side of her face.
“Do you want me to wait here for you?” Kathy asked. She crouched down and put her hands on Jioni’s shoulder.
“I’m ok, thanks.” Jioni smiled.
“Are you sure?”
Jioni nodded. “Yeah, I need a moment. Just make it home safely.”
