Unauthorized Trial: 8-23

“City Three has an old Outergen station. I saw the building as a kid, but I never knew much about it other than it doesn’t work.” Tracey’s voice lowered. “Atlas, my mentor, is the mayor there.”

“Ok,” Jioni whispered.

“But I’m not going to stand here and get blackmailed by a child,” Tracey continued. “I want you to try to leave. And fail miserably at it like you do everything else. Then you’ll come to your senses and realize you’re better off an Agent. So go ahead, try it.”

Jioni looked to the floor.

“I’ve known you since childhood, and you were so good then, and you’re still good now.” You’re a smart girl with plenty of potential.”

There was silence. And the overwhelming information hung over Jioni’s head at a nagging constant. But she mustered up the only words she could say.

“Goodnight, Mayor Tracey,” Jioni said.

“Goodnight,” she replied. “Know that I love you more than anything, Jioni, so please clear your head and get some rest.”
