Jioni reached into her bag. “Here’s a carrot, no lance twirling necessary.”

Emmitt took a bite first, then said, “Thanks.”

“I wish you the best with that, but the trials aren’t a cakewalk.” Jioni paused for a long time—she began eating the other carrot and looked at the floor. “But yeah, this whole thing makes no sense. They won’t tell us specifically what happened to our parents, but we are supposed to blindly and optimistically become Agents just like them.”

“That’s what I’ve been saying to Hippie Girl this entire time,” Emmitt chimed in. “What’s so noble to end up on a missing persons list, or worse?”

Jioni only sighed and continued to munch away at the carrot. It was sweet and crunchy. She distracted herself with it before taking the last bite. Her stomach became uneasy; a mixture of anxiety and hunger pangs set in as she held her stomach dizzy. She should’ve listened to Brandon and eaten that carrot slowly.
